Which Logo Do You Like Best (6 Months Later, I STILL suck At Design)

Do you like this story?

So, apparently, my sorry ass comes to you about every six months and asks for logo advice.

It’s pretty pathetic, actually. And it speaks to how bad my aesthetic sensibilities really are.

(By the way, if you think the design of THIS blog is bad, you should see my first one . . . Jonathan Mead basically called me up laughing about it one day).

Anyway, The Presell Formula is launching in like 5 days or something.

And my graphic designer (who’s awesome, BTW) had the genius idea of randomly sending me an awesome logo AFTER I thought we’d nailed this thing down.

Awesome (that really mucked things up).

So, anyway, I’m waiting to make a final decision here . . . and it would mean a lot to me if you’d leave a comment below letting me know which of the comments below doesn’t suck.

Should I go with Logo A or Logo B?

(In a few days I’ll tally the results and make a decision).

Logo A

logo F

Logo B

logo tube

Thanks a ton,
Clay

I like “B”, though is there a way to put an arrow into the Presell word as well?

  • Christina

I like Logo B because Formula is easier to read and because the test tube is awesome!!

  • Nanci

    Hey, Clay

The second one does it for me.

  • http://twitter.com/justinmckean Justin McKean

Logo B. Simple, nice, to the point.

  • Renee

    I like Logo B better.

  • http://marissabracke.com Marissa

Logo B. I like the lighter look of “Presell” in that one, and I like how the test tube image integrates with the rest of the word “Formula.” The F in Logo A doesn’t seem to fit in with the rest of the word as well.

  • http://fivedirectionsconsulting.com Maia

I’d go with Logo B…. but add a hyphen to Presell so it becomes Pre-sell. When I first looked at it I was trying to figure out who the heck Presell might be… thought it was someone’s name.

  • M. Link

I like Logo B better. While I do like the “F” with the arrows in logo A, to me having it slanted doesn’t quite flow as well with the rest of the lettering as the beaker does used as the letter L in logo B. Plus, I think the beaker makes perfect sense for the word and its blue ties the blue from the word Presell together very well.

Anywho, those are my 2 cents :)

    Cheers,
    M. Link, Logo designer

Logo B. Nice work with hitting on the “formula” concept

  • http://twitter.com/maniphisto Theresa Pridemore

They both have some really interesting and engaging qualities, but I think I’d pick the second one because it is more readable than the first. Because the arrows on the first don’t have the same bold outlines as the rest of the text, it doesn’t read very quickly as an “F” and sort of throws off the balance. And the test tube is quirky and does seem accompany the text well.

    Hope that’s helpful!

  • Shawn

    Logo B takes the cake.
Thanks for practicing what you preach!
    Nice work Clay!

  • http://www.financiallypoor.com Kevin

I’m gonna have to go with A because it looks more professional to me. I’m not a fan of the bubbles coming out of the test tube. Kinda looks like something I would see on a kids science site. Just my opinion.

  • Julie Marsh

I prefer logo B as well. I like the F in logo A, but find it slightly distracting. I hope that helps.

  • Ren

B does it for me. Lighter touch, easy to read and the test tube doesn’t disrupt the flow.

  • Marelise

    Absolutely Logo B!

  • Gretchenwhitcomb

Love B with the test tube! I think the F with arrow and the shadow looks way out of place with the other lettering.

  • http://nancimurdock.com Nanci Murdock

    A. For sure. I really like the arrow, and I don’t like the test tube so it was a no brainer for me! Plus, it’s stronger with the black(er) border and I think the contrast stands out.

I will say that I DO think the “F” should be upright (and not like off balance and looking like it just had 12 whiskey shots…), but I don’t really get design either. I don’t know why you just don’t ask Tracy!

  • http://www.pursuitofchange.com/ Mike Tiojanco

    Def. Logo B

  • http://www.imredg.com Reggie

    Ditto Justin’s comment; logo B.

  • http://flashobsessions.com Brooklyn

I really like B. It caught my eye and produced warm fuzzies. Logo A seemed like it was reaching for something, but it didn’t quite hit.

  • http://twitter.com/SOCLisa Lisa Gillispie

I can’t say I have any design sense, but for what it’s worth I vote for B – it feels more coherent. The arrows in A seem a bit out of place and disjointed.

  • http://iDecideFitness.com Donovan Owens

    Logo B no doubt!

Logo A is to bold with the outlines and takes away from the simple clean presentation.

The test tube is logo be sparks just enough interest without damaging the clean look of the rest.

    Logo B gets my vote.

  • http://twitter.com/katiemerth kathryn merth

    Logo B! I don’t get the arrows in “A”.

  • http://www.kissaskreations.com Karissa

As a fellow graphic designer, I say the stronger colors of A but a normal F and the test tube for the L in B. I really like the test tube idea as that ties in Formula.

  • Anonymous

B for sure. Hard to read A, looks too much like a race car logo

  • http://www.ianbrodie.com ianbrodie

B for me too – the F in A is difficult to read. (F in A sounds like I’m swearing – cool!)

    Ian

  • JB

    Logo B is much better.

  • Natebunger1

definately the second one…B…Hard edges, triangle shapes etc… are a no no in marketing…Right away the second one “felt” better

  • http://nancimurdock.com Nanci Murdock

OK. I am TOTALLY out voted. I get that. and can (barely) live with it. BUT, can you ask the designer to fix up that “F” in logo [A] and we can vote again. I can win this. I can.

  • Larry

I like Logo ‘B’ for for sure! Logo ‘A’ looks disconnected – it takes a moment to figure it out. ‘B’ is instantly recognizable. However, I do like the thicker black line surrounding the letters in ‘A’ – gives more impact.

  • http://www.dangeroustactics.com Christian Russell

B < my shortest blog comment EVAR :)

  • David

I like B), because it ties in to the word “formula”. More so than A). (i guess the F is supposed to be graph lines?)

  • Sylvia

I would like A if you change the F to match the rest of the font in color and make the arrows sighlty move “up”. (Upward motion in my opinion symbolizes “take off”, “success”, “moving up”…….)
B is nice as well and a good option, however I would fill the test tube a bit more (as to not get the half full/half empty feel)
    All the best! Sylvia

  • Tom

Definitely A if you switch the F and L to look like the logo B. B overall is too soft and doesn’t pop. Or just thicken the outline of Logo B.

  • rebecca massoud

To chime in with the chorus: definitely Logo B !

  • http://www.sbitigard.com Jeron

Definitely logo b, but thickening up the stroke so that its thicker like in logo a, and add a dash to presell so it actually says pre-sell.

  • Michelle Russell

(saying this without looking at anyone else’s responses first)

    B. *Definitely* B. The “F” in A is a little hard to read (made me hesitate, even though I knew what the name of your product is), and the arrows don’t really convey any meaning to me.

But the “L” as a test tube is perfect. Evokes the word “formula” and is easy to read, simple and clever.

  • Alison Weeks

Sorry, Clay. I don’t really like either. :-( But B is just o.k.

Besides, I know you’re saying “pre-sell” but I read it several times before I got it. I don’t think I’m stupid, howeh-var…it looks like somebody’s name (Joe Presell).

  • Maya

B, it is plain and simple. Vert straight forward.

  • http://www.heidi2524.com/blog/ heidi2524

I had a hard time reading the F in Design A, so my vote is for Design B, with the darker outline used on Design A.

  • Beverly

In a totally unscientific experiment, after reading your email I went to the web page and without reading anything just went to the logos and immediately found myself clicking on logo B. I guess that means for me B not only won the click through but my vote.

  • MARC

    B FTW!

  • Me

    B – though technically neither

  • Mamapa

    Definitely none of them!

  • http://hypno.co.nz/blogs Mike Reeves-McMillan

    B, definitely, much more readable.

  • xxx

Logo B with the borders of Logo A

  • Pierrre

B’s better. Shade is softer, more friendly, not so aggressive, plus the vial ties in to the name, brings back memories of chemistry classes. With A, the F seems disconnected. Pierre

  • http://twitter.com/albertellenich Albert Ellenich

I prefer Logo B. The test tube is more easily recognized as a symbol of chemistry and “formulas” or “recipes”. However, I suggest exploring additional space between the letters. The 2 “L”s in “Presell” form a distracting black line where they join up. And the letters in “Formula” look a little bunched together and have inconsistent line widths between them like in the “rm” pair. It almost looks like part of the “r” is behind the “m”.

You’re bringing back my time as a typographer when I first got out of school! Nice work!

  • Jill

Honestly, Clay — both are really awful. I’m sorry. A logo is not an illustration, and shouldn’t contain color fades or skewed typography. It’s obviously not done by a professional.

  • Veronicaforest

I like the second one. The first one looks like it is flipping you off–the F just doesn’t work. The test tube really nails it. I disagree about the thicker black letters, I think that will take away from the balance–especially with the test tube. Maybe add a little white space between the letters. It makes it easier for the eye to read.

  • Trulsp

B = Better but thy both suck, screaming home made, but maybe that is the right message?

  • Bob

Neither. A is clunky, and B is just text with a test tube. Keep working on it.

  • Anonymous

I say B , the F on logo a doesn’t make sense and looks weird.

  • DJM

I like logo “B” as well. The F in logo “A” is slightly disturbing and off kilter. The test tube in logo “B” really imparts the message you are trying to get across.

  • http://nancimurdock.com Nanci Murdock

That’s it I have to jump in here and take control. Clay, you might be thinking, “who the hell are you?”, but I spent 5 months in Project Mojave so I know you (insert evil laugh here).

We are going to take the borders of [B], and make the letter “F” of [A] stand up straight. We only need ONE arrow (the blue one). Also, I am replying to Alison’s comment because I too thought you had merged your company with one, “Mr. Presell”. So we need something between, “pre”, and, “sell”. Another arrow? Blue to tie in with the second word?

For the love of God, is Tracy on holiday or something?

    Must I do everything?

  • John logar

Logo B looks better a lot cleaner nice use of the test tube.
The only thing that i would look at changing is the “the” make it bolder because people will type in http://www.presellformula.com domain name and forget to type in the “the” other than that “B” looks great.

  • http://www.rencoach.ca Gerry Fryer

I like the one with test tube, Clay

(as a complete amateur and a consumer)

    Gerry Fryer

  • Jayne

I’m known for having a ‘good eye’ I guess you’ll have to take my word for it;) I plump for ‘A’, straighten up the F though and make it like the others, and take out the arrow and put it in presell to make it pre-sell (the arrow will obviously have to change colour to yellow) and just place it straight horizontal, no angling. This gives the the image of forward motion, and ties in nicely with the concept that one is pre-selling in order to get something (ie income, exposure) before moving on to the full launch. Also feel the colours would be better without the shade effect, the bold outline provides enough effect.

The logo is very masculine (and I mean masculine not male) but I think that it’s spot on as the product (I presume) is very action-orientated.

The test tube in B is creative but in my view doesn’t work in this instance because the formula here is not really about shaking up tangible things like in science or cooking so fails to pull the punch it otherwise could in those contexts.

Hope this is helpful. And thanks for asking..

  • Carole

First instinct, without even thinking about it, was Logo B. Then after thinking about it, still Logo B. Too much black around “Presell” in Logo A. Not that it makes it hard to read, it just looks heavy and ponderous. Oh, just noticed, there’s black around “ormula” too. The “F” has a sort of middle finger feel to it, if you get my drift, but maybe that’s just me. And it doesn’t relate to “forumla,” whereas a test tube does.

FWIW, just my opinion, your mileage may vary. But I do design logos for a living, though it’s sort of taken a backburner to other things these days.

  • http://twitter.com/markaskey Mark Askey

    Clay

B, but honestly not really excited about either. Both look a bit cheap. I agree with the above post that the borders on B should be bigger. I would also remove some of the space between Presell and Forumla. And if you have a icon in the Formula, couldn’t you also put a icon of some kind in the Presell? It needs a dash.

Sorry if I didn’t add value.

    Mark

  • http://twitter.com/a_creative_life Melissa Dinwiddie

I have to agree with those who’ve weighed in on logo B, with the heavier outlines. I think the heavier outlines make for a stronger logo, but the arrows on the F look confusing to me, whereas the test-tube is a cute image that makes sense.

  • http://twitter.com/jbeidler Joshua Beidler

I prefer B. The test tube is a subliminal phallic symbol, which will persuade male prospects that your course will increase their virility. But you probably already knew that.

  • http://www.thefineartofeducation.com Greg Corey

I like the boldness of A with the thicker borders and the richer colours…but yeah – that F just looks odd. Maybe try it with the F sitting straight up.

B gets the idea of “formula” across bette with the little test tube “l” but it needs the boldness of A plus I like the fun attitude it portrays. The colours look a little washed out (which may just be due to the thinner borders). As someone else pointed out too – with the thinner borders the letters need to be spaced out more, especially from the r-m in “Formula” but certainly the u-l spacing.

I’d go B with the bold borders and colours of A.

  • Brenda

Logo B. It’s cleaner looking and I prefer the test tube l to the F with arrows.

  • L.T.

A is pretty awful. B is better & the test tube is kinda cute. What’s a “Presell” though? Do you mean “pre-sell”?

  • TracyMojave

Nanci, I laughed so hard when I read this because I actually WAS gone this afternoon when Clay comes up with this whole logo thing. Looks like I can’t even leave that him alone with the business for a few hours :) Ha! Thanks for the laugh!

  • http://outcomemarketing.com Karilee – Marketing/Tech Coach

Go with “B”, the second one. The test tube is great!

But just to be difficult… I do find the letter spacing too tight, especially in the “Presell” part.

If you made it a square logo, put “Presell” over “Formula”, and slightly tilted the two L’s in “Presell” into an almost-V that lined up over the test tube in “Formula”, you might have something really interesting. Basically, create a funnel into the tube… Of course, I have a flu with fever, so what I’m visualizing might be coming from that… I just see a real flow from the blue to the gold that way. Kinda like this, but you’ll have to tilt the L’s yourself… http://outcomemarketing/wp-content/uploads/Imagine.jpg

  • http://VickiPI.com VickiPI

B, and I agree that it should be Pre-sell, not Presell; too hard to understand.

  • David

Logo B is very clean and cool. I like it

  • http://riseandshinepld.com Riseandshinepld

I’m voting A. Like the boldness and the leaning tower of F. Although, gotta admit, the test tube does get right brain points.

  • http://twitter.com/jedikelly Kelly Park

Logo B — like the test tube action!

  • MMK

    logo B

  • Steve Saley

I’m not really impressed with either one, but I suppose B is better than A.

A is REALLY contrived and B is just OK ( are there REALLY any test tubes involved in this ‘formula’…? )

I prefer logo B, but its close.

Have you considered adding a slogan? A slogan plays an important role in communicating what the site is, and who you are.

Good luck with the launch, and nice pre-prelaunch engagement.

    Jay

  • Susanamillionaire

    ‘B’

    success always

  • http://www.presellformula.info/ Joshua

Both don’t come across as great but if I had to pick, I’d go for B I guess. Like many people, the arrow thing just isn’t cutting it for me. At least the test tube has some relation to formula and looks better.

  • Sandra

I don’t like either one of them, but I like Logo B better than Logo A.

  • http://www.presellformula.info Joshua

Oops, me again. I think this was mentioned already but I also do like the borders on the first because it makes the logo ‘pop out’ more.

  • http://www.lifestyle-design.net Cameron Benz

I don’t like either one of them quite honestly. I’d go back to the drawing board.

  • RebeccaRomot

I like the second one. It ties the blue color together nicely and is easier to read.

  • http://managingemployeeperformance.com Leon Noone

    G’Day Clay,
Well……er…….neither of them really. The first one is too clever and consequently hard to read. The second has that silly little test-tube for an “l” They’re the sort of logos that win awards but do nothing to attract clients.
I’m not sure that logos matter all that much. It’s what they represent that counts.

And what’s the Presell Formula all about? It could be a method of treating oranges before displaying them or what you need to do to get a property ready for sale. It’s far too imprecise.
A good name or logo or slogan promises something very positive to the prospect. Nike’s tick is a classic as are Macca’s golden arches.

Sorry Clay. But you did ask.

    Make sure you have fun.

    Regards

    Leon

  • AC

As I read that for the first time; I pronounced “Presell” as press-ell in my mind. I’m wondering who Mr. Presell is, and what kind of formula he came up with..

PreSell, or Pre-sell, or Pre-Sell might solve that problem; for me at least.

Oh, and as to the aesthetics; I like the 2nd one…

  • Kriszia

    B, definitely B.

  • Matthew

The second. Less busy, AND it conveys the idea better.

  • N Stuart

honestly, none do it for me but logo B seems more interesting with the borders of A

  • Anonymous

The second one. Huge. Don’t really like the first one much to tell the truth.

  • KorenMotekaitis

Clay – I like Logo B. (I actually like the Presell from A and Formula from B). But if I have to choose from A or B, I choose B. I had to step back and really look at A. Normally I would have moved on. B is to the point and I like the vial.

  • Revmarian

Not crazy about either, I have to admit — but in a pinch, B over A, definitely.

  • Glenn

Definitely the first one; however, I would use the replace the outlining of the first one with the second one. The first one says success and getting it done. The second one is “cute” whereas the first one is cool and says “business with a hot edge”.

  • http://www.ebabynurserydecoration.com Dorothyray25

Clay, about A: the outlining makes the letters pop out. Good visibility. But the F with the arrows is too contrived, imo.
about B: the test tube is catchy, but could be more pronounce if the letters weren’t jammed so close. Or maybe make the space for test tube a little wider than other letters. It doesn’t show up at first glance as is.

  • http://brillbranding.com Tbrill

    Agreed!

  • Stephen

    I prefer B.
And I’m only helping out because I grew up in Lansing and Michigan winters look like you’re in a black & white movie (with a little dark red brick thrown in) so IT’S NOT YOUR FAULT that you’re aesthetically challenged…

B! far and away. I find the arrow on the F really CHEESY. The test-tube is just a bit more fun and original.

  • Angela

    Logo B. Definitely.

  • http://www.evomend.net Rolf

    B.

And I completely agree with Dorothyray25′s comments.

  • Anonymous

I agree with Veronica. The test tube really sells it and gives the logo just enough to make it interesting. I was thinking the same about the font though, it really needs a bit of kerning, because right now the letters seem crowded. Other than it looks great!

  • http://www.anencouragingbird.com BirdyD

I like the second one – the test tube speaks way more of ‘formula’ to me, and it doesn’t have the negative fung-shei of the poky ‘F’ in the first one. That ‘F’ feels like it’s jabbing me, which is not a happy thing.

  • http://www.marketingsteps.co.uk Pete

Logo ‘B’ for me. It’s very clear and the test tube looks great. Wishing you well with the launch.

  • Anonymous

Hmm well .. not over-impressed with your graphic designer, to be honest. B is definitely better than A but the letter spacing in B is way off. I think Pre-Sell should be hyphenated for clarity, when I read it the first time it sounded like “pressle” in my head (best not to ask about my head, maybe).

  • http://socialmediction.com alessiolr

    Logo B seems more balanced.

  • http://twitter.com/nytelse Nyta

    Most definitely B

  • Pamela

If I have to pick B is better than A, but as I would tell my DH the graphics designer “you’re not there yet”.
The ‘F’ with the arrow could be much better if it were upright, had one arrow instead of 2, and was the same font as the rest of the words instead of looking like a plastic preschool toy, its very jarring. I agree with those who say ‘pre-sell’ because I also wondered who ‘presle’ was.
I like the test tube, but my taste runs a little too far to the ‘kitschy’, so that is almost certainly a bad thing for you.

  • Rui Soares

I prefer Logo B. Maybe with bolder outline for the lettering (like in Logo A).
    Looks good!

I don’t necessarily have design sensibility, but I love the test tube so Logo B gets my vote.

  • Charlie D.

Don’t fret about the logo. Period.

You could put “The Presell Formula” in black, 48 point Times New Roman font on white paper and it would be more than fine. Do you want to win some design awards or do you want to make money?

Just make sure the product is great, and sell the shit out of it! ;-)

    What a strange request, Clay!

    Ahem. Logo A for me.

i agree with that. logo B is better, but I like the bolder color and shading of logo a.

  • http://www.bigbrassband.com Mark L. Smith

Logo A, but neither really strikes me as great.

The test tube in Logo B screams “high school chem!” to me.

  • http://halinagoldstein.com Halina

    B!

  • Olly

Sorry….I think they both look tacky.
A better than B, but the arrows don’t seem relevant.

  • MarkO

I think more people will respond to Logo B. Now that I have participated in your REAL Pre-launch step, let’s listen to our favorite station WIIFM ;-)

  • Eva

I like B better. I would space the letters as suggested by many. I like the test tube. It is very clever and makes me want to know more. I do like the darker colors of A, but don’t like the F with the arrows at all. I don’t like the outline of A. I think just making the colors darker in B will make it pop.

  • Olufunmike Alabi

I like the second logo. The test tube in the ‘formula’ speaks so much. I think you should go softer on the lines though

  • Olufunmike Alabi

    Logo B works

  • Cfayezh

Clay- I happen to like Logo B with the outlines of Logo A.

  • http://twitter.com/twtBrandon Brandon

    Logo B. Hands down.

  • http://thesuccessfulgeek.com Adam Teece

I like “B” because the test tube just fits in the word Formula for me much better than the arrows. Might be a bad time to mention this but what if you did something where the logo involved math somehow? Such as a numeric formula for preselling?

  • Mewzii

    Agreed!!

  • Roger

Logo B but I would still play with some different, bolder fonts.

  • Prague

is this the best choice..? I’d go back to the drawing board ;) I’m not a fan of A and B is predictable…

  • http://thomasbartlett.blogspot.com Tom

B, it flows a lot better than A.

  • Mr. C

    Hi,

Logo B, Also Make the S in Presell a dollar sign, $ – “Pre$ell” – The $ and the lab tube work together on a suggestive level.

    Mr. C

PS: Two lines through the S not just one.

  • http://www.womenscoachhouse.com Deb

I like the second one better…just initial gut reaction. Debbie

  • Roland Wijnen

I like the second logo as well. It’s more playful and the tube better captures the element of interaction that is at the heart of the presell formula. Logo A does not capture that visually (at least I don’t see it).

I know this is a lot later that the other comments, but here are my 2 cents:

Despite the overwhelming response, I don’t think logo B is better and here’s why: I’m in the Presell Formula group–even though, visually, the test tuble looks good, the F with the (second) arrow conveys the idea better. You’re no mad scientist working in his chemistry lab (at least I’m hoping not); you’re providing clear directions (thus the arrow) for us to get what we want. I don’t care for the bold in A, but the idea of the arrow works. Perhaps go back to the drawing board, but don’t settle for B. (Nanci M has some good feedback.) But Clay, I’d buy it no matter what it looked like, if that’s any consolation :)

    A . . . has a forward movement to it.
