How to Score Free Airline Vouchers by Reserving Overbooked Flights

by Clay on March 6, 2008

Yesterday I submitted a guest post to Dumb Little Man called How to Score Free Airline Vouchers by Reserving Overbooked Flights.  The article describes how to leverage airline overbooking — the practice of selling more tickets than available seats on a given flight — to gain free travel vouchers and roundtrip tickets.  If you’re a frequent traveler it might help out.

Because it hit Digg’s front page, the article received a lot of comments.  So if you want to see a real smackdown, as opposed to yesterday’s fake one, I’d head there (I was on the receiving end of the “smack”).

The front page of Digg! You must have previous experience blogging, or have studied and mastered the methods of conquering the blogosphere before getting up and running. At any rate, I congratulate you for your success and for your informative articles.

Wow, that post sure created a lot of confusion! I thought it was pretty clear myself, but maybe a lot of people haven’t flown very much.

Congrats on hitting the Digg front page! Although your article was great, I’m sure Dumb Little Man’s massive readership was a huge help. I see Dumb Little Man has a “Submit an Article” link that gives detailed information about what they’re looking for. It seems like a great way to get some exposure, as long as you don’t mind taking some smack.

Back in October when I was flying home from my trip to India, my friend and I ran into this situation in the Atlanta, Georgia airport. We were all on the plane waiting for our last flight of the day home to Little Rock, Arkansas. We sat and sat and sat some more. Finally a lady representing the airport came on and announced that they had too much weight on the plane and needed three people to take a later flight. My friend and I who had both been flying for over 20 hours said, no, we just wanted to get home. We had been on planes since 2:00 a.m. India time. It was around 5:00 p.m. Atlanta time. We were tired and wanted to get home. Otherwise we would have considered it. The three passengers were given a plane ride out probably an hour after us and got a free trip for another time on the airlines for being so abliging.

I haven’t read your article yet but I will go there and read it soon. It sounds like you are probably up for some very rapid growth in the blogging world. Congratulations.

@ReddyK: Thank you for the congrats. Dumb Little Man has about 60k subscribers so I’m sure that helped. And also a good friend who’s a really gifted writer helped me polish it off, and I think those two things probably had the biggest roles to play. And a little luck, I suppose :-). Thanks for the comment.

@JEMi: Thanks JEMi. I would have never written that article for this website, so it was nice to have a place to put it.

@Hunter: Oh definately. Having 60k subscribers (and an extensive Digg network) was a huge part of why it hit the front page. For sure. Good points.

@Patricia: I’m jealous of your trip to India but can see why you just wanted to get home after a long journey. Unfortunately, your story gets played out everyday in various airports :-(, which is too bad. Thank you for sharing your story.
