Helpful article, thanks. I've switched over to bartering recently for most of anything I can get without having to shell out cash. There are a couple sites out thereto use, to connect with people who are looking to barter trade/swap items or even services (carpentry work for auto work, etc). One of the sites I use is Baarter - http://baarter.com

They also have a free stuff section.

Loved your positive way of ranting. for me, its not ranting anyway. Its your way of expressing your supposed "freedom". (lol) I am not good at ranting too that's why I often advised ranting people to refrain or possibly "eradicate this word" for them to move forward and not the other way around.

I love your blog. I especially loved this entry. I agree with the Financial Philosopher, in that when you are blogging purely to make money, then you are blogging for the wrong reasons.

I don't see anything wrong with ego, in the sense of self-esteem. I'm not a big fan of the social media, but that's because it's so geared towards teenagers. That's changing, but slowly.

A lot of people blog to express themselves, and their focus on readership involves their desire to be heard and understood by others. Some people can make money that way, some don't. I don't see a need to criticize them for it.

I remember when I was in grad school, my life was simple and I could afford to focus on something single-mindedly. But many years later, there is a lot to consider, and the concept of "freedom" in the abstract is not particularly a goal of mine. (I suppose I should stop reading, then.) I've learned that nothing is really an "all-or-nothing" situation. Entrepreneurship comes with as many drawbacks as being employed by others -- it's all a question of what's the best fit.

I'm free in many ways while still working for others. I'm free to be myself, to say no to some unpleasant things, and required to do some other unpleasant things. It's exactly the same for the self-employed. Self-employment can bring just as much worry and stress. I don't lie awake at night wondering how I can make the payroll, as one example. What's the difference between having an awful boss and having an awful client?

I don't really understand why you're ranting just because we're not all the same. Even people who thought they'd make money but didn't might still be happy with what they're doing.
